Preparing our Students for Success in a Global Age

“Preparing our Students for Success in a Global Age”

Dear Parents of Grades 5-12:Tomorrow is the big test day for our hard working students taking the Specialized High School exam. We work really hard with our students teaching them research- based test taking strategies, test anxiety, stress management, memorization and concentration skills. Although we believe our test taking model is unique we are confident that our system will get our middle school students into the high school of their first or second choice. Most our students want to go to Brooklyn Tech and Stuyvesant

In order to get our kids excited for tomorrow exam we have a final session tonight with a panel of former alumni of specialized high schools to encourage our students for the exam. Our alumni panel consists of a certified math teacher from Columbia’s Teacher College, a Strategic Manager from Morehouse College, a scientist from University of Pennsylvania and Senior Vice President of large investment bank from University of Chicago. Here our unique approach to test-taking and achieving are all designed to give students the confidence they need to excel on the SHSAT. The courses offered by EAS include the following:

  • 18 total hours of strategic prep classes
  • 2 timed, monitored practice test sessions plus a review session for each test
  • Free SHSAT Flashcards
  • Test-Taking Coaching Workshop the first hour of the Sunday session that includes mastering Time Management, Stress Management, Memory & Concentration
  • Periodic phone/email consultations to monitor student progress and provide feedback to parents Q/A Expert roundtable with former alumni of Specialized High Schools before final week of the test
  • Personalized score reports detailing strengths and weaknesses
  • All materials included and provided
  • 1:4 ratio between test prep professionals and students
  • Last week before the exam a unique roundtable discussion with former alumni of Specialized High Schools to answers any questions student may inquire.

We will send out a full report of our measure of success when our students received their score. So please look out for the following email around February.

Our next session for the SHSAT will be in June so please register your 8th or 9th grader as soon as possible, because we only have limited spots available.

Our next standardized test is to tackle the SAT through our comprehensive Winter Prep Program. Please look out for this email and registered your child or students as soon as possible. We offer free practice test weekly.

About SHSATThere are nine* Specialized High Schools, eight of which require students applying for admission to take the Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT). At the time of the test, students list (in priority order) the specialized high schools they are interested in attending. The tests are scored by an independent company. Specialized high school offers are based solely on test results, the student’s ranked order of the schools, and seat availability.Students taking the SHSAT or auditioning for the programs at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School must also submit a High School Application and may rank up to twelve (12) additional high schools/programs. Do not rank the Specialized High Schools on this application. The results of the SHSAT are ordered from the highest score to the lowest score. The student with the highest score will be placed in the school/program of his/her first choice. Going down the list from the highest score, each student will be placed in his/her highest prioritized school in which seats are still available.

Therefore, if all the seats in the student’s first choice are filled, he/she will be placed in his/her second choice if there are seats still available. If all the seats in his/her second choice are filled, the student will be offered a seat in his/her third choice if there are still seats available and so on until all the seats in the eight schools have been filled.

Each student receives notice of any offer(s) from a specialized high school, as well as any match to a non-specialized high school/program. A student who receives a specialized high school offer must respond to the offer or it will be forfeited. If a student accepts, he/she will attend that school/program. If a student does not receive an offer or chooses to decline the offer, the non-specialized match he/she received is considered final, and he/she will attend that school/program.

How We Are Different

There are six features that we believe distinguish Esoteric Academic Solutions from other tutoring and test preparation companies.

1. Educational Evaluation and Cognitive Diagnostic Assessments

School can be very frustrating for students who may feel out of sync with their classmates and frustrated that the level of effort they put into their schoolwork is not matched by the feedback they receive. Our Educational Evaluations and Cognitive Assessments exist to give our students (and their parents) a road map to how they learn. Through the assessment process we identify students’ cognitive strengths and weaknesses and explain how these underlie academic struggles.

2. Academic Coach

We feel that teaching excellence is the key to student success. We ensure that our Academic Coaches are the very best in a number of ways. All Academic Coach must have scored a 99th percentile overall on the official SAT. They also must have prior teaching experience in order to be considered. All Academic Coach must undergo a rigorous recruitment process to be extended an offer. After being hired. Academic Coach then undergoes a 50+ hour training process before being allowed to see any student. In order to attract and retain the best teachers, we pay above the market rate for all teaching assignments, plus incentives and bonuses. This is up to 2 times the industry standard, and the highest in the industry.

3.Content-Based using the Latest in Education Research

We believe that the best strategy for success in mastering SAT/PSAT/ACT/SHSAT is to provide students familiarity with the math, grammar, and analytical principles. What make our curriculum different from our competitors is that we seeks to provide test takers of all levels with content mastery and an organized approach that builds skills for every question type on the exam, including the most advanced content that many other test prep and tutoring companies ignore.

4.Our Unique Curriculum

Unlike other preparation programs, Esoteric Academic Solution curriculum goes beyond a review of general test-taking tricks. Rather, our SAT/PSAT/ACT/SHSAT strategy guides and sample questions focus on actual mathematics and verbal content. Students emerge with skills, strategies, and a confident approach to every SAT/PSAT/ACT/SHSAT problem type and content area, from the basic to the most advanced questions.

  • Encourage students to have more tutoring sessions than they actually need.
  • Filter diagnostic assessment results.
  • Give students the actual tests they’ll be taking or condone cheating.

About Proud Poppas United

A former Youth Division Aide and Mental Health Therapist with the Office of Children and Family Services turned his reduction-in-force experience into a win-win situation, and many are reaping this harvest. When Tyrone “Zire” McCants, who is also a versatile services photographer and visionary in the Phoenix, AZ, lost his job; he took his youthful interest in photography and his prior knowledge from working in a family-centered position into new ventures. He even figured out a way to coincide his two passions into meaningful opportunities to advance his cause. The layoff he faced freed him up to develop his photography business (Zire Photography & Graphics) and to showcase his skills as a prolific artist. One of those ventures that McCants created was an initiative called Proud Poppas United; which is a community-based group designed to strengthen the bonds between fathers & their children. It aims to encourage a tradition of fatherhood and family, increasing the number of active fathers in our community. When McCants isn’t intellectually cultivating his repertoire of talents, he manages to merge his interest in photography with his desire and passion for fatherhood. Using the Proud Poppas Photo Project, as his flagship initiative, he displays images which celebrate and encourage the pride of being an active father. In many minority and ethnic communities, there is a progressive concern of absentee fathers and the devastating effects of this challenge on our children, our families, and community. He also believes that by displaying these images will help to shed light on and celebrate the gift of fatherhood. He hopes that this movement will also become contagious and bring other men closer to their children and families, and encourage a presence of well-being and development in our children, our families, our communities and our people as a whole. McCants quotes that “My scope is capturing the energy between a father and his children” and that’s what he is creating through his community development initiatives. Through, a first look into the reality concerning “Responsible Fathers” many disturbing statistics and contributing factors related to absent fathers. But, to the credit of McCants, he has been able to overlook the negative stereotypes and prejudices that have perpetuated his community and rise to the occasion. Although, he wears many hats that provide guidance and leadership to the infrastructure of his life’s purpose. To all of the fathers out there with the silent victories of triumph and the principle-centered leadership; who fight depression, financial woes, relationship conflicts, the penal system and the racism of our day; McCants say’s “Thank you” for all that you have been able to get accomplished behind your veil of anonymity. You have just endured the last 13 years of this millennium, and you are still here to tell about it. Although some will say that these last few years have been amazing they are still asleep to the fact that; we (The black community) must work with higher ideals versus dollars and cents. We must look within ourselves and see us as being brave, black, accountable, and reliable. The truth of the matter is that you are embracing fatherhood but at a frequency that may not be understood. I am with you as we will not look at the diluted statistics but at the “transformational leadership” that is displayed by all black fathers and role models everywhere. Don’t give up now as our families are leaning on you in these times of difficulty to represent us to the best of your ability as the “Mighty Men of Valor.” You are the man for the job, and now it’s time to come out of hiding and show the world what real black men look like; and we represent as a tribe of Intellectual builders, teachers, warriors, leaders and Kings. “Fatherhood is not a right; it’s a privilege. Your children are the best part of you. I send my love to this new generation of fathers who have learned from the sins of the past and take a very active role in the lives of our children. ~RAPPER TALIB KWELI, FATHER OF TWO
